Q: Dr. BBQ,
I am currently in a marketing class and I have decided to do my project on my family recipe for BBQ sauce. I am having trouble finding statistical data for my research. Any suggestions? I am not looking to have a restaurant just for an avenue to sell the sauce and trying figure out the best way to approach the market. Thanks,
Paralee
A: Hi Paralee,
The nature of the barbecue sauce business is entrepreneurial, so there is no right way or wrong way. What can you conceive that will move your product? How hard are you willing to work at it? That being said, the National BBQ Association may have some data, but the truth is the successful entrepreneurs aren”t giving up their secrets. http://www.nbbqa.org/
The other avenue I”d suggest is looking at the fiery foods industry. There”s plenty of cross promotion with BBQ. You can find some good info right here at www.fiery-foods.com You also might consider the Fiery Foods & BBQ show in Albuquerque. There are many veterans of the hot sauce and BBQ industry in attendance, along with plenty of buyers.
Last but not least is the fancy foods industry. I don”t have any direct contact for them but if you look around you should find some.
