Hi Dr. BBQ,

I’ve been using the Cowboy brand charcoal and have had mixed results. I use an older model Weber 22-inch grill and the coals never seem to get hot enough or last very long. Is there a readily available charcoal that you recommend? I prefer lump, but I”m open to any suggestions. Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

When you use lump you have to remember that a pound of lump is about twice the volume of a pound of briquettes, so you’ll need about twice as big of a pile to cook with. Another thing that happens with a grill like yours is that the small pieces of lump fall through the grate. You could get a piece of expanded metal cut to the size of your charcoal grate and this would help, or just get another charcoal grate and place it on top of the other one with the grates going across the bottom ones. Either of these fixes will keep the small pieces up where you want them. I think you’ll find that these things will help much more than using a different brand of charcoal.
