Q: Hi Dave,

I live in Granby, province of Quebec, in Canada.  I would like to know if there are varieties of chiles (Andeans maybe) that are more resistant to cold climates, or even frost resistant.  Are there any plants that can be matured in a shorter time span?  Please continue the good work of information and education through your fabulous website.

Thanks a lot,

Gilles Dumoulin

A: Hello Gilles:

Rocoto chiles (Capsicum pubescens) are resistant to frost, but a hard freeze will kill them.  To grow plants in a short growing season, it is necessary to start the seeds indoors very early, so the plants are more mature when set out in the garden.  For our basic article on growing chiles, see http://www.fiery-foods.com/dave/garden.html
