Q: Dear Dave,
I was told to ’kill the weeds’ in preparation for planting next spring, to increase the pH of my soil, and to give my soil a lot of organic material (I want to grow organically, if possible). So, how do I kill my weeds and increase my soil pH without chemicals? Is there an organic material that will increase soil pH? Is there a book on all of this? Do people grow chiles organically (certified) and are they worth more?
Thanks for any help,
Lex
A: Hello Lex:
There is no way to kill weeds without chemicals–all you can do is use mulch to keep them down or pull them out. If you mean by increase to make the soil more alkaline, add lime or dolomite. To make soil more acidic, add peat moss. People do pay more for organically grown chiles.
