Cross-Pollination?

Hi Dave,

I have a pepper garden in planters. I have limited space and I am concerned with cross pollination. I have serrano, Anaheim, yellow bell, tabasco, cayenne, habanero, poblano, and jalapeno. Do I need to worry about cross pollination and if so what should I do about it? Do you recommend to prune suckers from plants? How about any kind of pruning? Thanks,

Matthew

Hello Matthew:

Unless you are planning to save the seed, this won’t be a problem. Cross pollination only affects subsequent generations, not the current pods on the plants. If you want to save seed, then you would need to isolate the plants by placing cheesecloth over some of the flowers to prevent cross pollination by insects. Then they will self-pollinate. The only time I prune pepper plants is to get rid of the dead wood after they’ve over-wintered in the greenhouse.

Dave
