Hi Dave,

I have been all over the Internet trying to settle this question once and for all, but the more I surf, the more conflicting data I find… I have a recipe for Thai curried chicken. It calls for "birdseye" or "bird’s eye" chilis. Everywhere I look I see references to African birdseye chilis, and I’m pretty sure traditional Thai cuisine doesn’t use a plant from Africa. Having said that, I also found references to "prik khee nu" with about 7 spelling variations so far (for instance, "prik key gnu"). I want to identify the exact cultivar so I can locate seeds to grow the plant myself. I don’t want to end up with the wrong plant. (I’m already growing kaffir lime, lemongrass, and alpinia galanga for this same reason.) Do you know the correct cultivar? Thanks for any advice,

Denise

Hello Denise:

The correct variety is prik kee nu, which means "mouse dropping pepper." It is a very small variety of "bird pepper." This particular variety does not have much flavor, but a lot of heat.

Dave
