Dear Dave,
I had a chili ristras in my house and it got these yellow worms in it, so I threw it out. Now there are these flying bugs! I am very concerned! Can you tell me what are they, are they harmful, and how can I get rid of them for good?
Thank you,
Bug Scared
Hello Bug:
There are several species of insects that infest ristras, including various moths, fruit flies, and other flies. None of them are harmful. Use an aerosol insecticide for flying insects but be sure to put away any exposed food, such as fruits. Or, if you don’t like that solution, the insects will eventually die. Sometimes freezing a ristra for a couple of weeks will kill insect eggs, but the pods may be damaged.
