Q: Dear Dave,
I have a quick question regarding a ’land race’. I have been saving seeds from various hard-to-get pepper varieties, and I always select seed from the strongest, most healthy looking plants. I wonder how many generations it takes for a localized variety to develop. I tend to go for those that mature well enough to get to harvests in our UK climate, cooler than main land Europe.

Interesting question. Land races develop from a single variety grown in a certain region for at least 50 or so generations. They do not originate in regions that grow many different varieties because of cross-pollination. Although you are saving seed correctly to insure that you will have the hardiest varieties, you will not develop a land race in your lifetime.
