Chiles are Self-pollinating

Q: Dear Dave,

I am trying to grow 6 potted jalapeño plants on my balcony.  I was wondering what method of pollination these peppers use to produce fruit, i.e. wind, insect, manual pollination.  If these plants produce, I would like to move them indoors late fall through spring to keep up the fruit production.  While they are inside, what will I have to do to keep them producing?  I live in Gillette, Wyoming where it is hot, dry, and windy during the summer and early to late fall months.

A: Hello Beau:

Chiles are self-pollinating, so you don’t have to do anything.  Indoor plants need plenty of light, so place them in a south window.  You didn’t tell me the exposure of your balcony, but if it’s southern, you can leave the plants outside during the warmer winter days and bring them inside at night.  If you have cats, be forewarned that they will chew on the leaves.
