Q: Dear Dave,
I started growing peppers in my backyard this summer, and although I’ve made a few mistakes (such as planting seeds as late as April), I’ve been successful in growing a few jalapeños. However, there are many dark purple areas on the pods’ surfaces. Those areas started to appear in August, if I recall correctly, and I can’t say for sure if this is related to a particular climate change. We have had a very rainy July and a relatively dry August.
1. Is that a pod disease, or lack of/too much water?
2. Are they safe to eat?

A: Hello Christophe:
Purple is a normal immature pod color for jalapeños. When the pods mature, both the green and purple parts turn red. They are safe to eat.
